We're Going To ORCS!

For the third consecutive year, Case Western's A Team has earned a bid to the Opening Round Championship Series. This year, the tournament will be hosted in Hamilton Ohio. The A team finished the Cleveland Regional with a Record of 7-1 after hitting Edinborough, Michigan State A, Indiana B, and Notre Dame C. Athavan Balendran won an All-Regional Attorney award and Ren Weeden won both an All-Regional Attorney and Witness Award.

Case Western sent two other teams to Regional Competitions as well. The C team was the first Case Western team to compete at the Columbus Regionals. This scrappy team of underdogs finished with a record of 4-4 in one of the most difficult regionals around. Member, Mark Wang, won a perfect 20 ranks All-Regional Attorney Award. The C Team also walked away with the Spirit of AMTA award for their display of exemplary sportsmanlike conduct. The B team competed with the A team at the Cleveland Regionals. After a rough first day with a record of 1-3, the B team rallied on day two and finished with a record of 4-4 after making a strong play for the 7th spot out of the Regionals. The B team did not leave empty handed, member, Libby Schubert, was able to win an All-Regional Attorney Award after an impressive showing.

Never before has Case Western's Mock Trial Program been so competitive and there is only more success to come to the future. Now, Case Western A looks to secure a bid to Nationals and complete our #RoadtoLA

In Loving Memory of Smox

Dearest Smox was the trusted case box that safeguarded the affidavits and pre-trial materials for team Valor all of Fall Semester and the A team at the Hoosier Hoedown. After a successful day in Bloomington, Indiana, with a record of 4-0, the A team headed back to the hotel after placing Smox in the trunk of the van. Unfortunately, no one checked to make sure the back door of the van was securely closed. In a heartbreaking turn of events, as the van drove down the road, the back doors flew open and Smox tumbled outside into the cold, dark night.

Smox was a good case box. He never harmed anyone and up until his demise, he kept all case materials safe. He once was almost forgotten all alone in the law school the night before a tournament and during his life he lost both of his eyes. But, never once did Smox lose his charm and spirit. We will miss Smox with all of our hearts. He served us well.

Quaker Classic

Teams Valor and Mystic traveled to Philadelphia to compete in the University of Pennsylvania's Quaker Classic. This was a 52 team tournament behemoth hosting programs all over the east coast, midwest, and the south. Unfortunately, the Spartans walked away with no hardware due to the high award threshold. It took 7 wins to place, 18 ranks for a witness award and 19 ranks for an attorney Award. We had some near misses with Sanjna Arvind, Athavan Balendran, and Ren Weeden all earning 18 ranks as attorneys. Team Mystic finished with their first winning record of 5-3 and Team Valor finished 4-4.

Spartan Throwdown

The Case Western Mock Trial program, in their duty as Warden's of the North, held the 9th Annual Spartan Throwdown at the Justice Center in Cleveland Ohio. Schools from around the region came by to demonstrate their skill. All three Case teams competed with Team Valor taking third place with a record of 6-2. The program also saw Individual Awards from Sarah Thomas (17 Ranks Outstanding Witness for her performance of CEO Sawyer Shaw), Sanjna Arvind (17 Ranks, Outstanding Attorney for her role as a closing attorney on the plaintiff), and Tim O'Shea (18 Ranks, Outstanding Witness for his role as expert Sam Owens). In the end, the University of Pittsburgh was able to claim the top prize of the tournament. Congratulations to all competitors for a tournament well fought! We can't wait to see you again next year!

Scarlet and Gray Invitational

Over the weekend of October 15 and 16, during the Cleveland Indians' undefeated streak in the MLB playoffs, Team Mystic left the comforts of the north and traveled south to Columbus to compete at the Ohio State University's Scarlet and Gray Invitational. The goal: win another trophy for the Land. Team Mystic is coached by Rachel Rubenstein and Bradley Ouambo, two former mockers who never argue at all and agree on everything. The team is comprised of three veterans: Athavan Balendran, the human garbage can, Maria Pawluk, a.k.a. "Sassy B****," and Sanjna Arvind, the fan of a team who blew a 3-1 lead in the NBA finals. The rest of the team? Five wide-eyed, innocent neophytes, untouched by the cruel mock gods: Emily Ahlstrom, Rocky Kaftol, Kyle Parker, Varna Thayaparan, and Sam Weinberger.

The competition was fierce. We opened with a Plaintiff round against Vanderbilt A, a team coached by David Payne, Brad's former teammate. The two teams clashed hard, from powerful opening statements to dramatic closing arguments. The round was close; as the dust settled, we learned that each team had picked up a ballot by a small margin. In the following round, Team Mystic faced off against the University of Georgia and lost both ballots to their methodical case and disciplined performances.

After taking the night to regroup and receive lengthy comments from Brad and Rachel, the team went into Day Two, determined to grow and to avoid the mistakes of the day prior. The day began with an even match-up against Xavier B. Team Mystic learned the hard way that time management is critical to a team's success. With lengthy cross after lengthy cross, Team Mystic did not save enough time to get out all of their important points; Athavan was left with only three minutes and thirty seconds to perform an entire cross. Despite this struggle, the team managed to eke out a draw, winning one ballot. In the final round, the team faced off against Eastern Michigan University. Here, the team put on their most clinical performance yet. Their efforts were rewarded in a clean sweep of the ballots, picking up both ballots by a strong margin.

Team Mystic finished with a record of 4-4 after a strong performance on Day Two of the tournament. Athavan and Kyle both earned Outstanding Witness awards for their portrayals of Kirby Doolittle and Austin Perez, respectively. Next, Team Mystic looks to defend the Land in the Spartan Throwdown, hosted by Case Western Reserve University.
